Gecko feet could hold 350 pounds

A group of researchers polymer and biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst found at the foot of the gecko adhesive can support the weight of 350 kilograms (700 pounds) on a flat wall.

"Amazing, gecko feet can be stuck and off easily without the rest of the sticky glue on the surface," said Ducan Irschick, researcher for 20 years studying how geckos stick to and crawl.

Irschick, along with teammate Michael Bartlett, said the ability to stick, flipping, weight-bearing, and the adhesion of gecko feet opens the possibility of applying the same capabilities in a variety of synthetic materials.

"Various combinations of these capabilities have never been found before," said Bartlett.

The researchers say the glue surface area at the foot of a gecko about 16 inches square and can hold a maximum weight of about 700 pounds on a flat surface such as glass.

In addition to a strong stick skills, tools gecko stickers can be removed and reused several times without losing its adhesion power.

Irschick add gecko foot has a number of elements which interact include tendons, bones, and skin. Elements that produce the adhesion can be reversed.
