Cold Weather 164 European Swallow Soul, Many Dead Frozen Homeless
Deaths from extreme cold temperatures that hit Europe continues to grow. So far 164 people are reported dead, scattered in several places ranging from Ukraine to Italy. Many homeless people who froze to death on the streets.

Much access to the villages of Eastern Europe cut off. Communities were isolated. Temporary road, air and rail networks are also disconnected. Gas consumption continues to experience a surge in some areas during the hardest winter in decades.


In Ukraine, tens of thousands of people moved to shelters to avoid the cold. Ministry of Disaster Ukraine said 63 people were killed by extreme weather. Most of them froze to death on the streets and several others suffered hypothermia.

Nine people were killed in southern Poland when the temperature reached minus 32 degrees Celsius. Total 29 people have died since the cold weather began last week. Weather authorities in London, England, warned the cold weather will continue in many areas.

The agency said the snow expected to fall in the region of Kiev, Ukraine on Friday evening local time. British agency also predicted a temperature of minus 10 degrees Celsius will occur in Berlin, Germany. Snow is also expected to fall in many areas in the UK this weekend.

The International Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies warned that the homeless are most at risk for extreme cold weather in Europe.

"The bums are caught unprepared. They do not follow any further developments on the weather forecasts and very vulnerable," said the IFRC representative for Belarus and Ukraine, Zlatko Kovac as reported by AFP on Friday (02/03/2012). Red Crescent to help by providing hot meals, warm clothing and jackets.

In some other European countries, such as in Romania, the Ministry of Health said eight people died overnight. Total deaths in the country reached 22 people. Some schools in the country were closed. In Bulgaria, media reported 10 people were killed.
